For every person who stammers, Recovery is often their biggest and main life challenge.
This road is long and requires persistent daily management and action to be able to control not only our speech and communication but also our thoughts and behaviours to an acceptable level.
While you walk on this road, sometimes you go fast and at times slowly.
The purpose of recovery is about melting our Ice Berg which is quite unique per individual.
In order to walk on this road, you'd need to be equipped well with what you'd need.
- Take care of your Self-Esteem
- Work on your communication skills in general; learn from books, people and articles
- Learn to be a good team player
- Develop your confidence more by taking action and risks
- Learn to be assertive
- Develop your socializing skills, grasp opportunities - phone friends, shops, restaurants and hotels to practice.
- Learn how to release the stress e.g. by taking a shower, going to gym and exercise, drinking a calm team, etc. Stress, as you know, may increase the chance of stammer.
- Smile more and feel good; it releases the stress and welcomes positive thoughts.
- Stop trying to hide the stammer, stand still, accept it and face it
- Practice the techniques you know daily and always; see every situation as a practice scenario - the more you practice the better you become.
- Learn how to control your speech by breathing properly
- Learn about speech therapy techniques from books, articles, courses, people
- Attend speech therapy courses regularly (once a month at least)
- Have a Support Group to practice phone skills
- Be bold and learn to recover quickly from situations where was upsetting; e.g. someone hangs up the phone on you, etc.
- Learn to forgive yourself and others quickly; let unpleasant experiences go.
- Volunteer and organize presentations of interesting topics at work, home, school - to practice.
- Don' be ashamed to cry in your alone times if it helps releasing your negative emotions.
