If you think because you sometimes stammer, you should sound weak and trembling, you're absolutely wrong!
Although unmanaged stammering can lower the self-confidence and self-esteem and as a result the voice may sound weak and trembling sometimes but when you learn and develop the skill and wisdom how to manage, develop and maintain your confident voice, everything changes no matter there is a stammer or not and your voice becomes sexier, deeper, more confident, more powerful, more attractive and influential.
There are 3 main ingredients to this:
- Mental attitude; Hope and Belief that you can and you will.
- This is the foundation. Know that you have the ability to re-learn and re-program your sub-conscious behaviour and whatever you'd need to learn to be able to speak confidently and smoothly and to become an excellent speaker.
- If you don't have the hope an belief now, simply just start hoping and believing from now and gradually you will find evidences that proves your hope and belief.
- The right Strategies to develop the confident voice as below.
- Practice daily with Commitment by setting SMART goals until it becomes your new you.
- Make a commitment to stick with this until you see the results.
- Use proper auto-suggestion and affirmations. They can re-program your beliefs.
- Record and listen to the techniques. Jesus said, you believe by hearing. What does it mean? It simply means, what we hear can overwrite and re-program our subconscious. So use this brilliant secret to achieve your desired result.
- Scientifically proven, when we learn new things we build new neuron connections in our brain. Our brain has the capacity to build such neuron connections with practice.
Humming Bee Breath
Exercise saying "Hummmmhh" or "ooohhmm" at least 5 times before an important speak or phone call, of course in a quiet place.
This is perhaps the best technique that I know of which helps speaking more confidently and fluently!
It shapes your voice to sound deeper and more confident. Before interviews, making or answering calls, I usually use this exercise and that greatly helps.
Smile and Relax
A tensed body can only intensify stammering. When you learn to smile and relax always, it helps you achieve more fluency as well as helping your voice to be more natural and confident. In addition, it helps the person who sees you and hears you to be more at ease with you and feel better. With practice and the right mindset, you can even keep the smile and be in peace in all stressful situations in life.
Smile and relax!
Articulate and Pronounce Every Word Accurately
It not only helps your listener to understand you better but also it helps yourself to feel good being in your own time and resist the time-pressure.
Mumbling and speaking too fast are not attractive; speak slowly and pronounce every word.
Articulate!
Add Some Tonation and Rhythm
Instead of speaking with one tone of voice, add some more feeling to your words. Everyone loves when someone is full of energy and uses proper tonation in words. Stretch the words.
Speaking with one tone of voice is boring and unattractive and makes you appear like a robot rather than appearing as a human being!
Add some tonation and rhthm!
Listen Carefully, Respond Thoughtfully
This will raise your authority and makes you appear more attractive and confident.
Listen carefully and respond thoughtfully!
Confident Posture
A confident posture results in having a confident voice.
Body language not only speaks with others but also with our own mind.
Stand straight and tall, raise your chest, drop and relax your shoulders, open your face and eyes.
Have a confident posture!
Breathe Deeply
Breathing is of course very important. It lowers the stress and helps us have more control over the speech. Let the air flow easily, feel the air flows.
Shallow breathing doesn't help in gaining confidence and more fluency.
Breathe deeply!
Speak with Pause
After each sentence, pause for a couple of seconds. During the pause, breathe, think and take the speech in control.
Pausing not only helps others by allowing them to think about and analyse what you just said but also it helps you to regulate your voice and mind again. It makes your speech more interesting and it projects confidence.
During the pause, you can relax, breathe and think about what you'd like to say.
Speak with Pause!
Speak Louder but not Too Loud!
I can't hear you, could you repeat again please!
With some people, you'd have to keep asking them to speak up because they don't have the confidence or the willing to let their voice heard properly.
Speak louder, project your voice and this is important to appear more confident.
There is another important point that you shouldn't speak too loudly; it's not only annoying but also if what you said isn't exactly your deep opinion, it may appear as if it's your deep, real opinion and very very important.
In a business meeting, I was thinking only to practise this and raised very minor matters as if they are extremely important and that appeared to be unprofessional. My client didn't know I'm just practising but took what I said seriously and the end result/feedback wasn't very good really.
So you'd need to be really careful about the impact of this on others and when you should use this tip and when you should not. Speaking with a humble manner would usually do good as well.
Speak Louder but not Too Loud!
Speak with Confidence, Firmly and Deeply from Chest
Just thinking about speaking with confidence, helps us speak with confidence!
Speak with a deep voice from chest.
Some people or therapists advice speaking with soft contacts; that doesn't appeal to me.
There is more power and energy when speaking firmly and your voice becomes more influential.
Speak with Confidence, Firmly and Deeply from Chest!
Maintain a High Level of Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem
No one is always confident as confidence is relative and depends on the actions we have taken and the thoughts that we have but we'd need to keep taking care of our confidence and esteem.
There is another blog here which discusses about how to take of our self-esteem.
Maintain a High Level of Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem!
Socialize More
The more you socialize, the more you have the chance to practice these techniques.
At the same time, don't think you have to do all the talking. Listening well, asking questions and sincerely becoming interested in people all are as important as speaking confidently and smoothly.
Exercise Regularly, Sleep Well, Eat Healthier
Exercising will impact your Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem positively and consequently it will impact your speech and improves your fluency and confident speech. Exercise at least 2-3 times of a week and make it part of your life habit.
